3 Easy Fall Energy Efficiency Tips

Fall is just around the corner! As summer is rapidly approaching its end and cold temperatures are just about to begin, it is important to keep in mind the different ways of saving energy. Here are three ways you can save energy and money by following these simple steps.

Seal your windows!

Unsealed windows in the fall or winter are especially noticeable when drafts of cold air seep inside. Strong sealed windows with no cracks or openings are extremely helpful in saving energy and money. Not only is this tip very useful but, it is easy to do! You can seal your windows, walls, outlets, floorboards, and doors yourself using a low-expanding foam sealant. The cost of the sealant is usually under twenty dollars but, this can help you save up to twenty percent on your next heating bill. Investing in insulation is a smart move. Proper installation can save you hundreds of dollars in energy costs due to loss of escaping heat.

Inspect everything!

The fall is the best time to check and see if your heating and cooling systems are working properly(i.e. no signs of rust or damage). You want to make sure that the unit is heating your house efficiently and you aren’t paying more than you need to. Also, change the filters on your HVAC. This is important because not only does dirty filters worsen the air quality, but can also make the system work harder—which in effect increases your bill and shortens the lifespan of the unit.

Make adjustments in your home! Instead of reaching for the thermostat to turn up the heat, here are some few preliminary steps that you can take.

  • Open your curtains and let the warmth of the sun heat your house for free during the day. In the evenings, close your shades or window coverings to keep the heat inside. Wear warm accessories to keep cozy or add a rug to the floor for insulation.
  • When you do decide to turn on the the thermostat, adjust accordingly at night. You can save around ten percent on your heating bill by turning down the thermostat ten to fifteen degrees at night.
  • Furthermore, only heat the rooms in your house that are being used.

Some smaller adjustments include cleaning your refrigerator and dryer. Your refrigerator uses the most energy out of all your home appliances. The most optimal temperature is around 40 degrees Fahrenheit. At that temperature food is still being preserved but it also doesn’t waste electricity. By cleaning your dryer, you prevent it from working harder than it needs to. Clogged dryers from lint build up is not only a fire hazard, but can also an increase the energy used by thirty percent.

With each passing year, these energy saving tips not only help you and your wallet but future generations. As you know fossil fuels are continuously being used on a day-to day basis and are not a renewable source of energy. They also emit a harmful gas into the atmosphere and will eventually run out. By conserving energy, we exude less harmful gases into the air and slow the process of total consumption. It is important that we care and protect our environment for future generations to come. Small steps can lead to big changes. So, let’s start with the home!
