5 DIY Carpet Cleaning Hacks

Most homes have carpet in them and carpets tend to bear the brunt of all the dirt, stains, and dust the home accumulates. This means that they need to be cleaned as regularly as possible. Clean carpets are also healthier and make your home more livable. The following are a few carpet cleaning hacks to keep in mind as you spruce up your home to get it ready for your guests.

1. Use an Iron to Remove Stains

It’s possible to remove carpet stains using an iron. First of all, start by vacuum cleaning the carpet to get rid of all particles. Dampen the areas with stains and spots using a towel with a mixture of water and vinegar. Place the wet towel on the stains and spots and gently press the iron. Move it back and forth a few times. The stains should start to accumulate on the towel as the heat from the iron weakens them out. Keep ironing gently until all the stains are removed.

2. Essential Oil Carpet Freshener and Baking Soda

Carpets are not just supposed to be clean but they are also supposed to smell good and fresh. You don’t need expensive deodorizer to make your carpets smell great. You can make your own at home. Simply get about 20 drops of any kind of essential oil. Lavender and orange would be great. Mix the oils with 16 ounces of baking soda. Shake up the mixture until it’s mixed up very well. Apply the mixture on the carpet and wait for about five minutes. Vacuum clean everything and that’s it.

3. The Carpet Fluffing Technique

Sometimes your carpet may look like it’s been walked over by thousands of army boots. Well, the best way to deal with this is to fluff it out. There’s a simple technique that you can use for this. Start by spraying the hardened stained areas with a normal carpet stain remover mixed with some water and vinegar. Give this mixture a few minutes to work before blotting up the stain. Get a spoon, hold it on its side and run it across the carpet. Fluff up the fibers using the spoon as much as you can. Straighten them out too with your hands if needed. Repeat this process in all the affected areas until the carpet looks like new again.

4. Cleaning a Shag Carpet

Shag carpets are quite common and the cleaning methods used for them may be different compared to normal carpets. Most vacuum cleaners tend to have a lot of suction to clean up the shag carpet so using them is not really an option. But you can use a few techniques to get this done.

The easiest way to vacuum a shag carpet is to use the hose attachment of your vacuum cleaner. This will significantly reduce the power of the machinery but it will work. The process will also take long but it’s the only way to vacuum clean the carpet without running the risk of damaging it.

5. Homemade Deep Clean Carpet Cleaners

You can make your own deep clean carpet cleaners at home to get rid of allergens and dust mites on your carpet. You will need to mix up hydrogen peroxide with white vinegar and dishwashing soap. Add a few drops of essential oils and a small amount of fabric softener. Mix everything up in a gallon of hot water and the solution will be ready. It’s a cheap and safe deep cleaning solution compared to the chemicals that most people use.

Keeping your carpet clean is important in making your home more livable and classy because dirty carpets may attract allergens and other disease-causing pathogens.
