The closet is one of the most important parts of our bedroom yet we rarely pay the attention needed to it. It’s very easy to step into a well-decorated home only to find a mess waiting for you in the closet. It is understandable though. After all, no one will see your closet other than you so the incentive to keep it organized and tidy might not be there.

“I have the motto that says, 'Whatever you see in your closet that you like, pick it and wear it.' It's not just your closet, but just your life. Whatever catches your eye. Pick it.” - Willow Smith

You still need to get organized and you will be glad to know that it doesn’t take a lot to do so. Give yourself an hour or two of your day and you will no longer have to hide your closet from everyone. Below are a few tips that can help you:

Take Everything Out

The first step in dealing with a disorganized closet is to take everything out. If you have a certain organization plan in mind, you cannot get to work if there are still things in the closet. Get everything out and start working. It will be easier this way!

Get Rid Of Clothes You Don’t Need

Part of the reason why closets can be so disorganized is because of too many clothes that we don’t even wear. You need to start getting rid of them. This can be a very difficult task but if you can ask yourself the questions below, it will be easier.

  • Do the clothes fit anymore?
  • Have I worn these clothes for the last 12 months?
  • If I saw it in a store, would I buy it?
  • Is it still in good condition?
  • Do I look great in it?

If you answer NO to all or most of these simple questions, then it has to go. It’s just that simple!

Hang the Clothes You Want Neatly Where You Can See Them

Once you have gotten rid of the clothes that you don’t need, it’s time to return the ones you love back to the closet. Hang them neatly in a way that allows you to see each and every one of them. If you can see all the clothes, it’s very likely that you will wear each of them at some point.

Get New Hangers

Old and worn out hangers might also have a negative effect on how your closet looks and how it’s organized. You should buy new hangers as part of the reorganization. Uniformed hangers are a great option. They will look great and will contribute to your closet’s overall neat organization.

Fold Heavy Clothes

There are some clothes that can’t be handled by the hangers. Heavy clothes like sweaters need to be folded because they might easily weigh down the hanger, affecting the closet organization in the process. And we are not saying that you should fold the heavy clothes and stuff them somewhere in a drawer. You need to have an organization plan even for the clothes that will be going into the drawers.

Check Your Reject Pile and See If You Can Sell Something

Well, even as you get rid of the clothes that you don’t wear anymore, there could be some opportunity to make money out of this. Just go back to the reject pile and assess each and every one of them to see if there is any piece of cloth that you can sell.

However, if you still want to give away a few things, make sure they meet the following conditions:

  1. They are not torn or broken
  2. They are not discolored or bleached
  3. They are not underwear

Organizing your closet and making it neat and more appealing is easy. The sad thing is that most people don’t take the time needed to get this simple task done. Well, there is no point of living in a beautiful and well-decorated house if the closet is disorganized. Get to work and fix it with the simple tips above.
