What to Look for in a Reliable Handyman

If you have home improvement projects that need to be done, don’t spend time and energy doing it yourself. Hire a handyman! Before you hire a handyman, you want to research several candidates to make sure that the person you hire will get the job done efficiently and effectively. Here are some things to keep in mind when looking for a good handyman in your area.

It is important that you find an experienced handyman with a competent skill level because his or her knowledge will show in their work. For example, if you hire a less skilled, cheaper handyman who is not as familiar with what tools are needed for certain projects, he or she could end up doing more damage to your home. Also, in the long run, it could cost you more money to repair the second time around and cause more stress. It is better to hire the slightly more expensive, top-notch handyman who has both the skills and expertise to carry out the job done right the first time. This may require finding and interviewing several handymen in the area to find a reliable one. During this process, you should specify what job is needed to be done and see if the handyman fits your qualifications. Some may need further investigation by looking up their previous work history and reputation.

A reliable handyman must not only have the necessary skill set to complete the project but also, should have the tools as well. Most handymen have the basic skills for a  wide range of jobs rather than specializing in a particular one. This makes them useful for several different projects around the house. Areas that require training and specialized skill such as plumbing or electrical work require handymen that are more focused on these operations. A good handyman will also have past references and experiences to vouch for his legitimacy. Also, check if the handyman has the required licenses and permits to perform the services you are asking for. Be wary and cautious of any complaints and issues that were previously filed about the handyman. Tools are key to any home improvement project and a good handyman will have all the basic tools needed. If a more specific tool needs to be rented for your project, this could add to your final bill. However, this should not be in most cases.

Some characteristics that all good handyman have are arriving on time, paying close attention to detail, taking notes, and exuding confidence in his work without appearing arrogant. If he arrives late, doesn’t have sufficient experience or clientele, doesn’t present himself or herself in a professional manner, or is not able to articulate why he would be the perfect candidate for the job then that handyman is unreliable and untrustworthy.

To make sure you are getting the best possible price, get at least three bids and examine their offers. Look to see if supplies are included in the estimate, the bidder’s signature and date is present, and the payment method is how you like it-- the best method is to pay a portion up front and the rest after the job has been completed.
