Contracted "Porter Custom Homes" to remove a set of spiral stairs and replace with traditional stairs. We were quoted just over $4000 for about 3-4 days of labor and were promised that no alteration to the structure of the home would be necessary and that everything would be permitted. After making the first down payment of $2000 the crew shows up and informs us that they do indeed have to modify the structure of the home and cut a large support beam. By this point the drywall had been ripped open and the old staircase completely removed, so after his personal reassurance, we begrudgingly allowed the job to continue with the understanding that everything would comply with building code and be permitted and inspected. Fast forward 4 weeks (not 3-4 days as quoted!) and the construction is well underway to the point of paneling up the structure. We had yet to see an inspector or any paperwork documenting the job permit, but every time we asked we were assured it was being handled. Several days passed once again with no crew working on the job because they were pulled for other projects ( I assume more important than mine) and when they finally did show up to complete the job the finish work and paint was rushed. There are areas with blotches, bare spots, cracks in the drywall, and the wall paint did not match the rest of the room. There is literally 2 colors of paint on the wall. None of the poor quality of work is our biggest concern. I can go back and repaint the unprofessional paint job. I can remove the nails sticking out from the wood and fix the drywall cracks. I can clean up the paint brushes, garbage and material they left. I can even swallow the fact that the final bill came in over $6000! Well about the original quote. Our biggest concern is that we now have a staircase in our home that was never permitted and never inspected. I have no faith in porter Custom Homes after so many empty promises and severe unprofessionalism. We have taken action with the State Licensing board to address our grievances. If you are in need of a contractor I HIGHLY recommend you look elsewhere.
