Question and answer

Q. Can you give advice to homeowners on how to find the best contractor for their project?

A. My special niche is finding three qualified remodelers for a client's project. Not only is it price driven, but personalities come into play when having individuals enter your home. Also, if a home has been built prior to 1978 and the remodel will disturb more than 6 SF of surface, an EPA qualified company must be used. Adventure in Building has all required licenses and certifications and is aware of what is required.

Q. What are the most common jobs you do for your clients?

A. Adventure in Building provides preconstruction consulting and planning. Many of our projects are related to "ease of use" (sometimes called universal design or accessiblity design). We prepare as-built drawings, design development plans (engineering for permitting is possible), a bid package (for apples to apples bids), evaluate bids and present to the homeowner's, and oversee remodel acting as the owner's representative during the remodel.

Q. What information do you recommend customers have ready when contacting you?

A. Project location, floor plans and elevations (if available), recent survey (if project will extend beyond the existing plan), budget, and list of "needs and wants".

Q. What makes you stand out from other contractors in your area?

A. Adventure in Building has been in business since 1990 (that's a long time track record). We have the ability to visualize three dimensions from two dimensions (a bachelor of design in architecture and master of building construction degrees helped with this). We utilize the services of an occupational therapist who evaluates a client's abilities while we evaluate the home's abilities and we merge the two into unique design solutions.

Q. Describe three recent jobs where you made your clients really happy

A. A kitchen design for a family with one wheelchair user was recently awarded the NAHB Remodeler's 2013 Homes for Life (single space) award. The client's thanked Adventure in Building for a kitchen that the whole family could cook Thanksgiving dinner in.
A whole condo remodel was designed for a veteran and his wife (a wheelchair user). The clients owned the condo two years and didn't know how to get started. Adventure in Building got the project started and took it to a successful conclusion.
A kitchen was designed for a forward thinking woman who was able to walk but anticipated the possiblity of needing a wheelchair in the future. Her 1980 kitchen was cramped and now it is opened up and bright.

Q. What are the most rewarding aspects of being a local contractor?

A. Being a local contractor allows one to be familiar with the housing types and methods used to build them. This information is valuable for additions and remodels. Being local helps understand the jurisdictions and building department requirements as well. Having happy clients locally is very rewarding too.
